The Rockettes have been performing The Radio City Music Spectacular since 1933. And, each year; this event has become a highly anticipated Holiday tradition.
When Radio City Music Hall opened on December 27, 1932; The Rockettes were part of the lavish stage show. The dance group was actually founded seven years earlier, in St. Louis, Missouri. Radio City Music hall seats nearly 6,000 spectators. And, during the holiday season; The Rockettes perform 5-shows daily. And, their Christmas spectacular can begin playing as early as November 5th. The routine has changed immensely through the years. The dance routine was initially a brief part of an overall series of entertainment (including storytelling, singers, and other acts). But, has since been replaced with a full 90-minute routine performed almost exclusively by The Rockettes. Further notes: In 1925, the dance group was originally called "The Missouri Rockets". Then, after moving to New York; their initial name was 'The Roxyettes". There are two numbers of the routine which have played consistently since 1932: Parade of the Wooden Soldiers and The Living Nativity. Radio City Music Hall was nearly shut down entirely, in 1979. The Christmas Spectacular also began touring beyond Radio City, since 1994. The Christmas Spectacular features over 140 performers, on a 144 ft wide stage (which has a depth of nearly 67 feet).. The Radio City Music Spectacular continued their holiday performance, even during the labor strike
